85,000 Watts of Pure Love

Ever wonder what 85,000 watts looks like? Fear not, above is a handy visual aid.

This is the Robot Heart, which drove every night onto the deep playa at Burning Man and filled the desert with the cleanest, most powerful sound system I had ever heard. It was love at first beat — you can feel the bass in your chest from over a hundred meters away, and it sounds fabulous close-up. And the desert being a near-ideal infinite baffle, there are no reflections or echos to diminish the soundfield; you can still hear the clear and pure sound of the Robot Heart from almost a kilometer away. The best part is the whole thing is on wheels — it’s a rather surreal sight to see hundreds of people clad in fuzzy hats, LEDs, and EL-wire dance-walking along side the Robot Heart as it slowly migrates into the deep desert.

There’s nothing like watching the sunrise to the beats of the Robot Heart.

Shout-out to the Phage for being such an awesome and kind group of people to camp with. :) There’s no better way to spend a week camping in the desert than learning from a bunch of interesting and intelligent people.

Yeah, this is the downside of off-shoring myself – don’t get to go to the burn any more – I’ve made it twice in the 8 years since I left – but as I’m sure you know it’s hard without the infrastructure I had when I lived in the US …. still there are other reasons to go to the playa, and I will be in the SF Bay area for the next two weeks and the real reason I love the playa – rockets (http://aeropac.org/) – there’s a big launch next weekend – I have to see if I can sneak out and sleep in the back of the rental car

You should have mentioned in advance you were going! I was right down the street at The Hive, at 2:30 & Esplanade. Next year?

Also, going to Hong Kong for xmas — would a day trip to Shenzen be worth it for entertainment? I’ll contact you out-of-band.

Totally, absolutely worth it to take the trip to SZ. Do contact me. I may be near that area around Xmas en route to CCC.

And yes, hopefully next year, if I can pull off the logistics again. :) it was a lot of fun. Quite a haul from Singapore, but in many ways I enjoyed the contrast.

  3. Wow, I didn’t really regret not going till I read that you camped with my homies at The Phage. :D

Ooooh this song is finally up:

Played during sun-up by Lee Burridge on Saturday morning…unbelievable set, unbelievable song, with this poem dubbed over it:

    I am here
    I am here
    So
    So
    So, here I am
Out on the playa at burning man

Dancing in front the Robot Heart bus
The Sun is coming up, and so is my high
The color of the sky, changing right before my eyes
    Deep blue, to red hue
Smoldering on horizons edge, where mountains dip to dust
I’m with you my friends, and I’m with strange strangers~~~
That LED Heart is sparkling in the sky, catching my eye
And I ask myself, could this be LOVE… love… love… love.
And as I dance out of the night, and into the light
I just want to say, that some other beautiful day, I’ll dream about you all I can

Goodness yes the RH sound system was just /astonishing/. It has to be up there as one of the finest mobile sound systems in the world; not just forceful but perfectly balanced.

A tiny bit of speaker-building-pr0n from the know:audio guys here https://www.facebook.com/knowaudio/photos_stream but I’d love to see more photos of their system/bus construction. Hell I just want to hear it again.

You actually make it appear really easy together with your presentation but I in finding this matter to be actually one thing which I believe I might by no means understand. It seems too complicated and very large for me. I am taking a look ahead in your subsequent publish, I will attempt to get the hang of it!
